We have ten principles.

There’s a lot written about purpose and the value it can have for an organization. But there remains a disconnect between saying you have a purpose and operating as a purpose-driven organization. It runs so much deeper than marketing campaigns and charitable donations. Purpose must be woven into your DNA.

Once you've defined your purpose, you may ask, "Now what do I do?"

To answer your question, we've synthesized research and thought leadership into ten guiding principles. It's time for the doers to get doing.

1. Purpose impacts every aspect of your organization.

2. State your purpose clearly and publicly.

3. Use your purpose to drive decision-making.

4. Focus on long-term value.

5. Operate transparently and responsibly.

6. Invest in human capital.

7. Foster curiosity and continued learning.

8. Make purpose an ongoing initiative, from the top down and bottom up.

9. Work in collaboration with customers - and other organizations.

10. Generate regular impact reports.

1.

Purpose impacts every aspect of your organization.

Purpose is your North Star. It is woven into your onboarding and training programs, meetings, product and service development, and culture building activities. Brand and organization become one in the same because your organization lives its values.

2.

State your purpose clearly and publicly.

Your purpose is front and center, published for everyone to see in places that are easily accessible, like your website.

3.

Use your purpose to drive decision-making.

Instead of looking outside for opportunities and financial gain to direct your next steps, your organization establishes a position strategically based on what you want to accomplish. Your organization intersects with its purpose at every decision-making point. And when your leadership makes decisions, you ensure that all stakeholders are taken into account.

4.

Focus on long-term value.

Your organization is motivated by forces larger than immediate financial return and cares about the legacy it will leave behind. Business decisions are made based on what will serve your organization’s purpose and provide lasting value, as well as what will make your organization financially stable. Specifically, you take a cradle-to-cradle perspective on what you produce, closely monitoring the impact throughout the product or service’s lifecycle. Most importantly, there is a plan to sustain the purpose as you scale.

5.

Operate transparently and responsibly.

Being purpose-driven starts at home. Your organization operates with complete transparency, implementing fair business practices that value the whole person. You also protect the integrity of your supply chain and minimize negative impact on the planet.

6.

Invest in human capital.

Your organization offers gainful and meaningful employment. That includes: paying fair and equitable wages, offering multiple levels of opportunity, fostering an inclusive culture, and supporting overall health and well-being.

7.

Foster curiosity and continued learning.

Your organization provides opportunities for your team to think and to grow on a regular basis. Growth should be personal and professional.

Principle 8-01.png

8.

Make your purpose an ongoing initiative, from the top down and the bottom up.

Your organization’s purpose was forged not only by the perspective of the leadership but also by the input of the whole team based on the greatest points of continuity. Your purpose, mission, vision, and values are reviewed regularly.

9.

Work in collaboration with customers - and other organizations.

You co-create solutions with customers and bring that voice into every aspect of your business, investing in a future forward approach. Additionally, you have a fluid relationship with other similarly purposed organizations to innovate around products and services.

10.

Generate regular impact reports.

Just like the other financial reports your organization already generates, you also generate an impact report based on financial data and other sources directly related to your business activities. These metrics will have goals tied to them, and your performance on these goals is equally as important as performance on your bottom-line goals.

DEFINITION

We define a purpose-driven organization as “an organization that is committed to both making money and making a positive impact, whereby its impact is inextricably linked to how it does business.” That means the organization makes decisions based on its purpose and its bottom line.
